Double Series

2022

The Double series takes my work in a new direction by adding a layer of canvas. While much of my previous work focuses on exploring texture and pattern, Double presents another dimension to these themes.

When I think of layers, I imagine the richness of depth. With the canvas doubled, I was able to expand upon the sculptural elements of my work with abundance. The inclusion of layers allowed me to consider new proportions, framing them in a way that offered the canvas a foundation from which to spill out. I wanted these works to be exuberant more than they are quiet–their quietness exists in the background. The focus is their sense of volume.

In each work, the canvas overflows in a dynamic arrangement, and in some instances, asymmetry naturally abounds. There is a greater aptitude for visual variety in these works, encouraged by juxtaposing weight and scale with the careful construction of repetitive forms, within and beneath. These compositions are an interpretation of three-dimensional complexity and presence.
